The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam commented on the first maritime exercise plan between the ASEAN and US navies earlier this month and said Vietnam would join.
“As far as we know, the ASEAN and US maritime exercises will take place from September 2-6. This is an activity conducted under the agreement between ASEAN and US defense ministers in 2018. As a member of ASEAN, Vietnam will participate in this exercise, “said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Thi Thu Hang answered the reporter at a press conference on August 22.
Earlier, newspaper Bangkok Post of Thailand led ASEAN sources said the exercise will take place in five days starting 2/9 off the Gulf of Thailand, with the participation of at least eight ships and aircraft.

The exercise will begin at Sattahip naval base in the province of Chonburi, Thailand, and stretch to the tip of Ca Mau in Vietnam. All ASEAN member countries will join the US Navy in this exercise, co-organized by the US Navy and Royal Thai Navy.
Bangkok Post identified the exercise to create a balance in the relationship between ASEAN and China and the United States, two great powers that have a great influence on Southeast Asia.
Last year, ASEAN and China also had maritime rehearsals off the port city of Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, China.
